Lenten Drama Series - "Will You Betray Me?"

Will You Betray Me? Five-Part Lenten Drama Series

“Will You Betray Me?” (Luke 22:48) This was Jesus’ question to Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night he was arrested. In our lives of faith as Jesus’ disciples, it is a question that could be asked of each of us as well.

Meant to be featured as part of a mid-week worship service during the season of Lent, this five-part drama series focuses on “betrayal” as a central theme. Written in a direct and edgy style, the monologues feature biblical characters that (knowingly or unknowingly) contributed to the betrayal and death of Jesus.

1. SIMON, THE UPSTANDING PHARISEE
(themes: responsibility, morality, and self-righteousness)

2. RACHEL, THE CONCERNED MOTHER
(themes: ingratitude, gossip, and the assumption of guilt)

3. SIMON, THE INNOCENT BYSTANDER
(themes: duty, personal distance, and not getting involved)

4. DINAH, THE FORGIVEN ADULTERESS
(themes: scorn, resentment, and suspicion of motives)

Scripture texts are assigned for each of the dramas, along with notes for actors. Discussion questions are included with each, to be used as the basis for a sermonic reflection or mini-Bible Study. Dear Colleagues using the Sola Lord's Prayer Curriculum:

One of our faithful beta-testers, Pastor Pentti Maki, found a small error on page 9 of the new Lord's Prayer Confirmation booklet, in the section regarding Jesus' parable of the two sons called to work in the vineyard (the erroneous text said "second son" where it should have noted "first son" as the obedient one).

You can download a full 11x17 corrected page online HERE for those would like to replace the entire back-to-back sheet in booklets.

Activity B3 - Lesson 7: Empty Tomb Craft

Lesson 7: The Resurrection (Matthew 28:1 - 15)

Create an Empty Tomb - Materials Needed:
- piece of large size construction paper (not white) for each child
- a piece of paper bag (approximately 4"x4") for each child
- variety of fabric scraps including white fabric
- yarn scraps and paper fasteners for each child
- scissors, glue, and markers
- a copy of this lesson's prayer (older children can re-write it; one each for younger children)

Have each child crumple their paper bag piece repeatedly until it has a rough stone look. Flatten out the paper bag piece and cut it into a boulder shape. Lay the large construction paper piece horizontally and attach the boulder to the left bottom side with the paper fastener. The fastener should be applied to the bottom left of the boulder. This will allow the boulder to slide up on the paper. Slide up the boulder and write "He is Risen!" underneath it. Lower the boulder back so you cannot see the words until the stone is "rolled" away. Have the children cut out robes for the angel and the two Marys. Use the white cloth for the angel's robe. Use yarn for the hair and markers for the faces. Write the prayer from the lesson at the top of the paper. For younger children: pre-cut the fabric, boulder, prayer, etc. so they can simply attach the pieces to the paper.

Act out the drama: Act out the drama provided, make noise and fall down for the earthquake; have two guards fall to the ground, etc.

Activity B3 - Lesson 6: Make a Board Game

Lesson 6: The Thief Repents on the Cross (Luke 23:32 - 43)

Create a Repentance Board Game - Materials Needed:
- large piece of paper for each child (from a craft paper roll)
- markers, pencil, miscellaneous decorative craft items
- miscellaneous items to use as game markers

For this project each child will create a board game around repentance. For younger children it may be best to make a class board game together. Provide the children with some reminders of common things in a board game; for example, on this square move back three spaces, or short cuts between spaces. Encourage the children to remember the theme of repentance - the game should be about God's forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Tell the children to take their time and be creative and have them decorate the game. Further ideas: the third to the last square could have a skull on it, the last winning square could be labeled"Jesus' Forgiveness", one square may be labeled "Big Sin - go back 10 squares" then that square could be labeled "God's Grace Return forward 10 squares".

Activity:
Take turns playing the children's games.

Invited to the Banquet of the King is series of dramas about Christian worship. The story follows the allegorical path of a poor mystified peasant on the way to a banquet with the King. Unworthy and unsure of why he has been invited, he meets several citizens of the Kingdom along the way who help him understand what his journey is all about.

Activity B3 - Lesson 5: Grow a Garden

Lesson 5: Judas Betrays Jesus in the Garden (John 18:1 - 14)

Grow a Garden - Materials Needed:
- plastic cup for each child
- flower/plant seeds
- potting soil
- puff paint and stick on gems

Using the puff paint draw plant stems and leaves growing up the side of the cup, stop a couple of inches from the top of the cup. Place stick-on plastic gems a little ways above the stem, then draw petals around the gem to the top of the stem to make flowers. Use other colors to create patterns inside the petals, such as stripes or dots. The children could also add bees, butterflies, or grass. Then have each child fill their cup 3/4 full of potting soil and plant the seeds according to the directions.
For younger children cut out construction paper flowers/insects and let them glue the pieces to the cup.

Activity - Answer with a Question:
Play this trivia game like the popular television game show. You provide the answer from today's lesson and the children ask the question. For example, the answer is "Kidron Valley"; the question is, "What did Jesus cross to get to the garden?"

Activity B3 - Lesson 4: Lazarus Race

Lesson 4: Lazarus is Raised from the Dead (John 11:17 - 44)

Play Lazarus Race - Materials Needed:
- roll of toilet paper for each team racing

Each team gets a roll of toilet paper and picks someone to be Lazarus. On "go" the teams use their entire roll of toilet paper to wrap Lazarus. Wrap the arms and torso separately, avoid the head entirely, and wrap the legs together (but not too tight). When the toilet paper is used up, the rest of the team races to the opposite end of the room and yells, "Lazarus, come out!" The wrapped team member tries to meet their team on the other end of the room without breaking the toilet paper wrapped around their legs. First Lazarus across the room wins. You may want additional rolls of toilet paper so the children can pick a new Lazarus and play again. Using a hallway would provide a longer race route.

Bible Story Trivia:
Simple questions from the story can be asked to see if the students picked up on the details about names, places, objects, and events. For younger children these may be phrased in the form of "yes" or "no" questions.

Activity B3 - Lesson 3: Build a Good Samaritan

Create a Good Samaritan - Materials Needed:
- clean recycling of all types (milk jugs, toilet paper tubes, old spoons, plastic piping, etc.)
- scissor, duct tape and craft glue
- googlie eyes, construction paper, markers, yarn

For this project the children will build a good Samaritan. Do this as a class or individually. Lay all the recycling and craft items out and have the children use their imagination to create a good Samaritan with what is on hand. You may want to make a sample ahead of time as an example; for instance, milk jug for a body, toilet paper roll legs, wood mixing spoon head with a face drawn on and yarn hair. Encourage creativity.

Activity:
Use the creations as the actors in the drama provided in the Sunday Schoolhouse Activity book.

Activity B3 - Lesson 2: 3D Maze

Lesson 2: Mary Listens to Jesus (Luke 10:38 - 41)

Create a 3D Maze - Materials Needed
- empty cereal box for each child
- scissors, tape, glue, and markers
- marble or ping pong ball for each child
- various obstacles:
cotton balls, corks, toilet paper tubes, etc.

Like the story, the kids will need to make it through the maze of everyday things that distract and keep us from Jesus in order to make it to the goal which is being with Jesus. Have the children cut out the front cover of the cereal box, leaving the sides and back in tact - it may help to reinforce the corners with tape. Save the cover. Mark one corner of the box "Start", then mark a different corner "Jesus". The object is to build a 3D maze which would allow the children to tilt the box in order to get the ball from "start" to Jesus". Use the cover to cut walls and tape them in the box upright. Then add pieces of toilet paper tubes for tunnels, corks/cotton balls, etc. for obstacles to maneuver around. Smaller children will find it easier to have mazes with large obstacles and to use ping pong balls. Older children can make their mazes more elaborate and use marbles to try to make their way to Jesus.

Touch and Run Memory Verse Activity:
Print the memory verse on cards or heavy paper, using one or just a few words on each card. Place the cards at various places around the room. Show the students the location and order of the cards. One at a time, have each child run and touch each card saying the words as he/she goes. See who can run the course in the least time.

Activity B3 - Lesson 1: Weather Vane Cross

Lesson 1: John the Baptist Points to Jesus (John 1:19-34)

Create a Weather Vane Cross - Materials Needed:
- Styrofoam cup for each child
- straw for each child, long enough to stick out of the cup
- tag board so each child can cut out two arrows and two crosses
- Plastic Jewels self stick to decorate with
- transparent tape, scissors, and craft glue
- aluminum foil

Turn the Styrofoam cup upside down. Teachers can use the scissors to poke a hole in the bottom of the cup just large enough to push the straw through. Remove the straw and cover the cup with aluminum foil. Wrap the foil and tuck it under the cup. Poke the straw through the aluminum foil into the hold already made in the cup. This is the base of the weather vane and the pole to hold the arrow and cross. Use transparent tape to secure the straw to the top of the cup so it stands fairly straight. Take the tag board and cut out two matching arrow shapes (arrowhead on one end and feather shape on the other) approximately 5 inches long. Using the craft glue attach the arrows horizontally on the straw about 1.5 inches above the cup. Glue them parallel to one another. Next cut out two crosses from the tag board. Decorate the crosses with the stick on plastic jewels, then use the craft glue to attach crosses to the straw above the arrow. The weather vane is complete.

Laundry List Memory Verse Activity:
String a clothes line from one end of the room to the other. Print this lesson's memory verse on cards or heavy paper using one card for each word. Pass the cards out to the students. See if the children are able to clip their word to the clothes line in the proper order. If time allows, have them take the words back down mix the up, pass them out and see if they can do it faster!

LCMC Pastor Peter Churness has just released a music CD called “My Messiah — A Celebration of Jesus Christ,” inspired by Handel's Messiah. This guitar-based version uses the same words (all taken from Scripture) but with a contemporary-folk musical style. Activity B2 - Lesson 7: Psalm 23 Book Craft

Lesson 7: The Lord is My Shepherd (Psalm 23)

Create a Psalm 23 Book - Materials Needed
- 8.5x11 sheet of craft foam for each student
- two sheets of copy paper for each student
- crayons or markers and pens or pencils
- yarn and scissor
- copies of Psalm 23 for each student
- hole punch

First cut the craft foam in half so the you have two 8.5 x 5.5 sheets, this is the front and back cover of the book. Cut the copy paper in half the same direction and stack it inside the covers. Using a hole punch, punch three holes on the long left side of the book, make sure to punch the inside pages as well. Cut bits of yarn, string through the holes and tie loosely to hold the book together. Write the title on the front of the book, "Psalm 23", underneath write "Illustrated by: (add child's name)". Younger children may need the psalm printed and cut into sections to paste in the book. Older children can write the psalm using their copy for reference. The children will illustrate the pages following the imagery of Psalm 23. Suggested outline: Page 1 - verse 1-2a; Page 2 - verse 2b-3a; Page 3 - verse 3b; Page 4 - verse 4; Page 5 - verse 5; Page 6 - verse 6. The back page can be used to give a biography of the illustrator: name, age, where they live and how they spend their days.

Activity: Find the Verse
Race to see who can look up a given Bible verse the fastest. Have students sit with their Bibles closed in front of them. The teacher then reads off a book, chapter, and verse and students race to look it up. The first student to find the verse in the Bible reads it aloud. That same student gets to choose the next book, chapter, and verse to look up.

Activity B2 - Lesson 6: Shield Craft

Lesson 6 - Nehemiah Rebuilds Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2 and 4)

Make a Shield - Materials Needed:
- each child will need a piece of cardboard or
tag board big enough to make a shield
- scissors, tacky glue, and packing tape
- aluminum foil
- construction paper
- permanent markers

Cut a strip of cardboard about three inches wide and ten inches long and set aside. From the remainder of the cardboard trace then cut out the shape of a soldier's shield. Wrap the shield in aluminum foil to give it a metallic look. Use the tacky glue to glue down the sides of the aluminum on the back of the shield. Take the strip of cardboard previously set aside; using the packing tape attach each end of the strip vertically to the back of the shield so that the children can put their arms through and hold the shield from behind. Using the construction paper cut out a cross and glue it to the front of the shield. Use the permanent markers to write, "Do not be afraid - Remember the Lord who is Great and Awesome." You may want to have this typed for the smaller children to paste on their shields.

Activity: Acrostic Prayer
Make an acrostic prayer based on the theme word "Responsibility". Use each letter of the theme word as the starting letter in each word of the prayer.

Activity B2 - Lesson 5: Furnace Diorama

Lesson 5: The Fiery Furnace (Daniel 3:1 - 30)

Create a Furnace Diorama - Materials Needed:

- large empty cereal box for each child

- copies of the drawings of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego for each child

- grey/red/orange/yellow construction paper

- cotton balls

- scissors, glue, black markers and markers or crayons

Cut out a large arched entrance from the front of the box. It should be large enough to allow the picture of the men to be added inside. Cover the outside of the box with grey construction paper and glue it into place. Cut tongues of fire out of the red/orange/yellow construction paper and glue them to the back of the box so they can be seen through the opening. Add some tongues of fire to the foreground by folding and gluing a tab on the bottom of the flame allowing it to stand upright. Color the pictures of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Cut out the drawings leaving about one inch under their feet. Fold over the extra paper under their feet and glue that onto the floor of the box so that they are standing inside the furnace. Pull the cotton balls gently so they flatten somewhat, color the tops lightly with black marker and glue to the floor around of the furnace. Decorate the furnace adding lines for stones on the grey construction paper.

Activity - Sound Effect Drama:

Read the drama provided for this lesson adding as many appropriate sound effects as the kids can think of, i.e. crumple up paper for the sound of the flames when the furnace door opens. Be creative and resourceful!

Free Electronic Calendar from CPH

Last month, Sola Publishing released its new Liturgical Calendar for Lectionary Year B: 2011-2012. It has been very well-received.

In helping to make the break from ELCA resources, many people have expressed thanks that Sola is recommending the LCMS version of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) along with the use of the ESV Bible (English Standard Version).

PDF copies of the color and grayscale versions of this calendar may be downloaded HERE for free; hardcopies may be ordered through Sola for a nominal charge HERE. Permission is granted to photocopy these sheets for local congregational use.

Our friends at Concordia Publishing House have also released a free electronic version of the Lectionary Calendar for iCal (a mac-based calendar program). Go to the CPH website at:

Activity B2 - Lesson 4: Jonah Activities

Sunday School Series Activity - Red Unit B2
Lesson 4: Jonah Flees from God's Calling (Jonah 1 & 2)

Jonah Swallowed by a Big Fish - Materials Needed
- Hard boiled peeled egg
- dry glass bottle with an opening a little smaller than the egg
- two matches
- clear tape, paper and scissors (optional)

This science experiment is a fun way to illustrate Jonah being swallowed by the big fish. Set the end of the egg on top of the opening of the bottle to show the children the egg will not fit into the bottle. Light the two matches and drop them into the bottle. Place the egg quickly over the opening once again. The burning matches will change the temperature of the air in the bottle in turn changing the air pressure in the bottle causing the egg to go into the bottle/swallowed like Jonah. If you'd like, decorate the bottle with paper fins prior to the experiment to give it the look of a fish.

Jonah Spit Out Activity - Materials Needed
- long piece of string (two spots to tie the string)
- straw
- balloon
- tape
- picture of Jonah

Tie one end of the string to a chair or door knob, thread the straw onto the string and tie the loose end to another solid object (i.e. door or chair) so that the string is taut. Blow up the balloon holding the opening shut, but not tying it. Tape the picture of Jonah to the side of the balloon. Tape the balloon to the straw so that the opening of the balloon is facing the nearest tied end of the string. Release the balloon, Jonah will go flying across the length of the string as if he has been spit from a large fish.

Activity B2 - Leson 3: Altar Craft

Lesson 3: Elijah Challenges the Priests of Baal
(1Kings 18:17 - 40)

Altar Craft - Materials needed:
- paper plate for each child
- markers
- frosting and plastic knives for each child
- 12 pieces of caramel for each child
- chow mein noodles
- red/yellow/orange jelly beans

On the outer edge of the plate have the children write, "You, O Lord, are God!" The children will build the altar like Elijah did. The caramels represent the 12 stones Elijah used. Use the frosting to stick the stones in a circle to the place. Put a dab of frosting inside the circle and put on the sticks of wood/chow mein noodles. Then add another dab of frosting and stick on the fire/jelly beans.

At-home Activity:
Instruct the children to recount the story to their families as they all share in the edible craft.

Lesson 2: David is Anointed as King (1 Samuel 16:1 - 13)

Create Puppets - Materials Needed:

- toy cow, action figures for
each character in the drama

- string

- 10 dowels

- thimble with water

- optional: large craft paper and crayons

Tie the string to the dowels, then tie the other end of the string under the arms of the action figures and cow so they hang down a foot or two from their own dowel. If time allows take a large piece of craft paper and color a scene for the figures to walk in front of.

Activity:

Using the drama provided have the chilren walk the characters in and out of the scene as appropriate. At the end, Samuel anoints David with the thimble of water.

Advent Candle Readings

As Sola begins releasing its worship support materials this Advent, one of the first products now available is a booklet of readings for the lighting of Advent Candles. Intentionally kept simple and straight-forward, this brief booklet can be used for the lighting candles of the Advent wreath in the worship services of the congregation, or it may be used for weekly family devotions (perhaps at Sunday dinner).

Lesson 1: Gideon's Small Army (Judges 7:1 - 23)

Create a Midianite soldier/tent
Materials Needed:
- a piece of construction paper per child
- copies of the soldier figure
(click HERE for a Soldier Pattern)
- markers, crayons
- tape, scissors and glue

Take a piece of construction paper and cut it lengthwise. Fold both pieces in thirds. They now make two tents with open tops. Lay them flat on a table and glue the soldier costume onto the side of the tent. Be sure to glue the soldier costume and draw him so that the feet will be on the ground when the tent is put upright. Draw in the soldier's face and color the costume. Tape the two ends of the tent together so that it stands up. Set up all the tents/soldiers in the middle of the classroom to use during the drama reading.

Drama Activity:
Each child will need a kazoo or some other instrument to use as a horn and a flashlight. Read through the drama. Near the end when Gideon tells the men to surround the Midianites turn off the lights (making sure everyone can still read the drama). When the army shouts, "For the Lord and for Gideon!" the children should blow their kazoos and point their flashlights all around the Midianite camp set up earlier.

Lesson 7: Rahab and the Spies at Jericho (Joshua 2:1 - 24)

Create a Window - Materials Needed:

- square piece of cardboard for each child

- square piece of tin foil big enough to fold over the back side of the cardboard

- red cord or yarn

- popsicle sticks (several for each child)

- copy of the prayer for this lesson

- glue and scissors

Wrap the foil around the cardboard square. Glue the edges to the back of the cardboard to hold the foil in place. This is the glass pane for the window. Glue popsicle sticks around the edges of the square to make the window casing. Add more sticks to create smaller panes of glass. Glue the prayer for today's lesson on ones of the window panes.

Back In Time Activity:

This game leads the class in a quick review of the stories they have covered so far. Picture sheets from previous lessons can be used as "flash cards", with the teacher asking the students the basic plot of each story and how the story ends.

ESV - English Standard Version

Beginning in Advent 2011, Sola will be producing weekly lectionary inserts as downloadable pdf files, able to be reproduced locally. These inserts will incorporate texts from the English Standard Version of Scripture (ESV).

Because of its textual accuracy, the ESV comes highly recommended by people from across our partner associations, including leaders of NALC, LCMC, CALC, and Lutheran CORE. It is the version used in the Lutheran Study Bible from Concordia Publishing House, and is also the version of Scripture quoted in the ReClaim Catechism sold through Sola. It will be the primary recommended version of Scripture included in future Sola Publishing releases.

Make a Serpent on a Stick - Materials Needed:
- one chop stick or ruler per child
- 8.5x11 yellow construction paper
- scissors, glue, transparent tape, markers
- googlie eyes
- yarn

Have the children take the yellow construction paper and begin to cut a spiral leading toward the center of the paper. Leave approximately 1 1/2 inches between cuts as the spiral is made. Near the middle of the paper stop the spiral cutting leaving an oval shape at the end - this makes the snake's head. Lay the paper on the table and use the markers to decorate it with snake skin patterns. Add googlie eyes to the head and glue on a yarn tongue. Fray the ends of the yarn slightly to make the tongue look forked. Tape the top of the snakes head to the top of the stick and wind the body around the stick (the body may need to be shortened).

Re-do Drama Activity:
Read the drama in parts as written. Then go back and choose a better path for the people. Instead of asking why they were brought out to the wilderness to die; choose to thank God for releasing them from slavery. Instead of complaining about the food; thank God for giving them just what they need to live on.

Sponge Painting the Burning Bush - Materials Needed:
- glue
- acrylic paints in tan, brown, black, red, orange, and yellow
- paint brushes
- several sponges (large and small)
- stamps of shoe prints and footprints or sponges cut in those shapes.
- large piece of white paper per child
- copies of Exodus 3:5 "Remove the sandals from your feet...you are standing on holy ground."

Barely dip the face of a large sponge into the tan paint and gently dab a little paint on the paper to make the mountains. Using a brush paint the branches of the bush on the mountain. Using the smaller sponges, barely dip the face of one sponge into yellow and another in orange and red. Dab them gently around the branches adding fire. Show Moses' path up the mountain by using the shoe shaped stamp/sponge and black paint, then add the barefoot prints closer to the bush. Glue the verse at the top of the paper.
Alternatively, make this a class project using a large piece of paper for a mural and have everyone work together.

Out-the-Door Activity:
Have the students line up at the door. In order to get out the door, each student must answer a question from the story. If a student misses the question, have him or her move to the back of the line and try again. You may want to ask harder questions first, moving on to the easier ones. If you finish all the quesions, start over; don't worry about asking the same questions a second time.

Sunday Schoolhouse Unit B2 Released!

The second installment in the the "Red Year" of the Sunday Schoolhouse series has just been released. This unit covers the second half of the Old Testament, under the subtitle: "Stories of Prophets and Kings." If you are using the Red series this year, you are now set with lessons through the end of December.

For those who are counting — maybe it's just me — the three-year cycle of Bible Story Lesson Books is now halfway complete! I'm pleased to say that Sola has published its Sunday School installments on schedule, according to our three plan.

When the basic three-year Sunday Schoolhouse series is complete, I look forward to adding a matching workbook for older elementary students. Our plan is to produce a "digging deeper" edition to match the Sunday Schoolhouse series, which will include Bible history, geography, and text study for question/discussion, aimed at the 5-7 grade level.

Lesson 4: Joseph Explains Pharaoh's Dreams (Genesis 41:1 - 45)

Cow Paper Tube Craft - Matierals Needed
- two empty toilet paper cardboard tubes per child
- black construction paper
- yarn, craft glue, markers, scissors
- copies of the cow face provided

Cut one of the cardboard tubes in half the short way to make the cows legs. Cut the other cardboard tube in half lengthwise. One of the halves will be the cow's body. Take the other half and cut it again the short way, this quarter piece will be the head. Using black marker, color a line around the bottom of each of the two short tubes that make the cow legs - these are the hooves. Cut black construction paper in the form of patches and glue them randomly onthe cow's body and legs. Glue the cow's body onto the top of the legs using thick craft glue. Use yarn to make a tail and glue it to the underside of the body. Older children can braid the yarn. Glue the cow faces onto the quarter piece of tube and use craft glue to attach it at an angle to the front of the cow's body.

Ball Toss Greeting Activity:
Have the children gather in a circle. Using a small soft ball start tossing gently to each child saying, "Good morning (name that person)." The child that catches the ball replies likewise and tosses to someone else until each person has been greeted.

Family Tree Craft - Materials Needed
- fair amount of small branches
- blue, brown, green construction paper
- green tissue paper
- glue and scissors
- pencils and markers

Use the blue construction paper as the background. Have the children cut a tree trunk out of brown construction paper and glue it onto the blue paper. Have the children cut out enough leaves from the green construction paper so that they have one per family member. Write the names of the children and their family members on the leaves. Glue the small branches above the tree trunk making the branches of the family tree. Glue the small leaves near the branches. To make the tree appear full, glue small pieces of green tissue paper around the tree top by wrapping a small piece on the erasor end of a pencil, dipping it in glue and pressing it onto the paper. Use markers to make wood grain lines on the trunk.

"Find the Verse" Race Activity:
Break the class into two teams. Pick a Bible verse, whichever team can find the verse and read it first gets a point. Highest points wins the race.

Sin is at the Door Craft - Materials Needed:
• white and black construction paper<
• photocopy of door pattern (thick paper)
• scissors, glue, crayons, markers

In the middle of the white paper trace an old looking door. Cut out three sides of the door so that it will stay connected to the paper on the “hinge” side. Glue the black paper to the back of the white paper so that when the door opens you can see the black paper. Using a white crayon write the word “Sin” inside the door. Outline the door frame using yarn and use straight vertical pieces of yarn on the door to make it look like it is made of wood planks. Color the door to make it look like wood grain. For a reproducible door pattern, go HERE.

On the rest of the white paper help the kids brainstorm different ways to cool off when people get angry; ideas that would help us not to open the door to sin, but keep it closed i.e. reading a book, exercising, talking to a friend. Younger children can draw pictures around the door representing these ideas, while older children can write their ideas in a little more detail around the door.

Circle Greeting Activity:
Start your morning with circle greetings; for example, the shoe greeting. Everyone stands in a circle, each child puts one of their shoes inside the circle. Take turns grabbing a shoe and saying, "Good morning (naming that person)". The child returns the greeting and grabs a shoe until all the shoes are chosen and everyone has given and received a greeting.

Create a Class Animal — Materials Needed:
• sheet of paper, scissors, glue, tape
• decorative craft supplies: fabric, yarn, imitation fur, googlie eyes, colored pipe cleaners, etc.

God made all the animals, some of them quite strange. Think of what God did with the platypus and see what the class can create. Have students contribute one of the animal’s attributes to create a whole new animal.
a. Body: hairy, scaled, feathered, etc.
b. Legs & Feet: hooves, claws, toes, webs, etc.
c. Arms & Hands: fingers, wings, claws, pincers, etc.
d. Face: nose, teeth, beak, trunk, snout, ears, etc.
e. Head: horns, antenna, mane, hair, etc.
After making a list, have each student make one part of the animal out of marker drawings, fabric, etc. Just like Adam named the animals, have the class come up with a name for their new animal. (Option: Instead of just one animal for the whole class, have each child may make their own animal. Encourage them to take their time and be very creative.)

God's World Cookies:

Start the new Sunday school year with a treat. For the cookie craft you will need plain sugar cookies - 1 for each child, green and blue frosting, several plastic knives and spoons, small paper plates, and animal crackers. Each child will decorate their cookies like Earth with blue water and green land; then place an animal cracker on the cookie.

SOLA CONFIRMATION SERIES - TEN COMMANDMENTS
The Fall unit of the Sola Confirmation Series on the Ten Commandments is coming along nicely. It will undergo final editing next week, and is on schedule for release in mid-August. If all goes well, copies will be ready for sale at the L-CORE/NALC gathering in Columbus next month.

I have attached a sample of the first session on the First Commandment HERE. Refer to the previous post (below) for a description of all ten sessions.

SOLA CONIRMATION SERIES - TEN COMMANDMENTS

To those who have been using the Sola Confirmation Series in its beta test phase this past year, and those who are looking forward to the next unit on the Ten Commandments, I wanted to send a brief update to let you know what is coming.

Everything is on schedule for the ten session unit on the Ten Commandments; it will be available to be used for classes this Fall (2011). The completed book will released by the end of August at the latest. Prior to then, I will be sending out individual sample sessions to give you a preview.

For the time being, let me provide you with an overview of topics. Each session below corresponds to the like-numbered Commandment (1-10).

WordAlone Invests Entirely in Sola Publishing

FROM THE WORDALONE BOARD AND STAFF

Times of difficulty and crisis are ones that often call us to hard decisions. For people of faith, this makes it even more critical that we seek to live in trust and obedience. Such is the case facing WordAlone as an organization at this time.

As servants of Christ, we are called by our Lord to be faithful managers and stewards of all that he has entrusted to us - not only in terms of our material resources, but even more importantly, in his Word as "stewards of the mysteries of God" (1 Corinthians 4:1). Jesus explained the kind of planning and foresight that he requires of his stewards. He said:

Which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. (Luke 14:28-32 ESV)

For many years, WordAlone has sought to serve as a faithful gathering of disciples and workers in God's kingdom. Often with very limited resources, WordAlone has engaged in the battle for truth again and again, and has never shied away from taking a stand for the sake of God's Word. Over the years of its history, WordAlone has also laid a foundation and built many strong and significant ministries that continue to serve the larger fellowship of orthodox Lutherans. The Lord has used WordAlone to provide for the future of fellow-believers in this new Lutheran landscape. The faithful stewardship of WordAlone has borne fruit in many ways among us.

Yet, with all that it has been able to accomplish, WordAlone has never forgotten that it is accountable in its stewardship to Christ himself. Throughout our history, we have prayed that when the time came for us to pass that stewardship on to those who follow, we would graciously commend the resources that God has given us as a legacy to the continuing ministry of Christ's Church. That day has now come.

For several months, WordAlone's resources for ministry have slowly been shrinking. While we maintain a high level of trust and appreciation from our constituencies, many WordAlone folks have naturally started investing their support into building for the future with new congregations and mission opportunities. This is as it should be. But this shift in focus has meant that there is less and less money available for WordAlone itself to continue our "transitional support" ministry. To put it frankly, after several months of cutting salaries and expenses, our funding has finally been depleted and WordAlone cannot continue in its present form.

The Board of Directors, as stewards of WordAlone's resources, has concluded that the time has come to limit WordAlone's continuing ministry to the one area where we can best be of service to our fellow disciples, Sola Publishing.

Sola Publishing is a growing and thriving ministry that has emerged out of WordAlone's commitment to solid Biblical and confessional preaching and teaching, and it has become increasingly obvious that this much needed ministry is the best gift we have to serve the broad constituency of our friends in faith, including LCMC, NALC, CALC, CORE, and other faithful Christians who want to stay grounded in God's Word. With an eye to the future, WordAlone will be investing all its resources and energy into building Sola Publishing into a full-service publisher, able to meet the needs of our expanding fellowship of congregations. We hope that you will continue your support of this essential ministry, which focuses on the best gifts that God has given us.

At the same time, the Board has expressed its intention that WordAlone should not continue to operate under a deficit or incur additional debt, nor should the larger organization continue to be subsidized by Sola Publishing, which needs support for its own development. The Board has therefore decided:

1. The executive positions of President and Vice President of WordAlone must regrettably be eliminated. Support staff will be reallocated where possible.

2. WordAlone's existing auxiliary ministries will be bequeathed to our partner ministries where they might best be used to serve our larger constituency.

3. WordAlone will work to fulfill, in good faith, the financial commitments incurred over the past few months, and back-compensation of its employees.

4. WordAlone will continue to exist, exclusively doing business as Sola Publishing.

While these hard decisions are not made easily, we acknowledge that the command of Christ to serve the ministry of faithful stewardship is not optional. Our Lord expects us to use wisdom and responsibility in seeking to serve him daily in a faithful and effective manner.

As WordAlone moves forward as Sola Publishing, we ask for your financial support in this transition. We ask for your prayers and encouragement, as we continue to minister in the legacy of our namesake - Sola Scriptura - God's Word alone.

Lesson 7: John's Vision of New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:1 - 14)

As part of this lesson the children will make the Well of the Water of Life:

For this craft each child will need a good amount of mini marshmallows, glue, blue decorating sugar, markers, a piece of construction paper, and plastic glue on jewels. Each child will get a piece of construction paper to use as the base to build their well on. Glue the mini marshmallows into about a 5-6" circle. Then staggering the marshmallows stack a second and third row making the sides of the well. Carefully spread some glue inside the walls of the well on the paper. Sprinkle blue decorating sugar on the wet glue to look like water in the well. Older children can write the Lord's word below the well, "To those who are thirsty I will give you the privilege of drinking from the well of the Water of Life without payment." You can print off this verse for younger children to glue onto the paper. Use the plastic jewels to glue around the paper for further decoration. Older children can go further trying to create the Greek symbols for Alpha and Omega (see page 31 of the Classroom Resource book) on their sheets using jewels.

Lesson 6: Paul Asks Philemon to Forgive (Philemon1)

As part of this lesson the children will play the Forgiveness Game:
Have the children stand in a circle. Pick one child to go first, he/she turns to the person next to them and as silly or seriously as they like says, "Brother/Sister will you forgive me?" The person they've spoken to needs to respond, "Brother/Sister I forgive you, but I just can't smile." The child has to say the response without smiling or they have to sit down. Keep going until there is one person left. After the game explain that it is often uncomfortable asking for forgiveness, but it is very important. And that like in the game, just because you ask for forgiveness it doesn't mean the person doesn't feel hurt anymore and they may not be ready to smile. Even if they don't feel better yet knowing someone cared enough to ask to be forgiven helps. End with the prayer provided for this lesson.

Lesson 5: Demetrius Stirs Up Trouble (Acts 19:23-41)

As part of this lesson the children will make clay sculptures:
For this project you will need enough modeling clay for each child to get a large enough clump to sculpt with; as well as beads, plastic jewels or other decorations. The children can mold a hill and form a cross standing at the top. Press beads and jewels into the cross for decoration. Very small children may want to use popsicle sticks and glue if they are unable to make a cross stand up out of clay. Give older children more items to decorate with. Encourage detail like wood grain on the cross or grass on the hill. Explain that our faith should be out in the open - "up on a hill" like the cross they made. They, like Paul and his friends, may feel rejection, but can pray for courage in standing up and speaking in Jesus' name.

Sunday Schoolhouse Series Activity - Unit A4

Lesson 4: A Slave-girl and Jailer are Set Free (Acts 16:16 - 34)
As part of this lesson the children will make chains and break free:

For this lesson you will need large size grey construction paper, tape or stapler, scissors and markers. Cut strips of constructions paper lengthwise approximately 2" wide. Each child should have at least three strips. Label the paper "sin", "evil" and "fear". Next, the kids can shackle their legs with the strips of paper. Two strips used to make loops on each ankle - tape or staple the paper together, and one strip to link the two shakles together. Now the children are chained in bondage to sin, evil and fear. Older children can be more specific on their paper, listing specific fears, sins and evil. See how easy it is to run around the room while in bondage. Revisit Paul's story in Acts. Explain how we are baptised in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and have the children rip a chain link and gain release with the reading of the trinity. The children could make a second set to bring home and demonstrate to their family.

Lesson 3: Barnabus Give, Ananias Lies (Acts 4:32 - 5:11)

As part of this lesson the children will discuss dilemmas:
Ahead of class, prepare some index cards describing a situation where a person would need to make a moral choice. (There are several books and card decks of this nature that can be purchased at Christian Book Stores). Lay out a several different dilemmas a person might face in life and asking how the students would respond in that situation:
- An example for younger children might look like this: You are at a friend's house. Your friend has a lot of toy cars, and has two of one kind that you have been wanting for a long time. Would you take the car since your friend has so many and has two of that particular one?
- For older children, the dilemmas should be more complex. For example: Say you received extra change back back from making a purchase at a big store. You didn't ask for the money; it was not your fault. Would you keep the money or bring it back?

As you discuss the situations, have the student think about the consequence of their choices. For example, keeping extra change given to you accidentally at a big chain store will not cause the store to go bankrupt, but what about the cashier whose drawer is short? What do they think happens when you add up mistakes over a course of a year, could prices for everyone be raised? For younder kids, will a child be asked over to a friends house again if their friend knows their toys might be taken?

For an added activity, have the children illustrate one of the scenarios with a drawing, illustrating a good choice for that particular scenario.

Lesson 2: The Spirit Comes at Pentecost (Acts 2:1 - 21)

As part of this lesson the children will make a wind sock and/or play Balloon Trivia:
Wind Sock: For this project you will need yarn, construction paper - various colors including red and orange, markers, clear tape, hole punch and an empty toilet paper tube for each child. Each child should cut out four flame shapes using the red and orange paper. Have the children write words reminiscent of Pentecost on the flames, such as Holy Spirit, Wind, Breath, God. Punch a hole in the top of each flame and set aside. Take the toilet paper tube, punch a hole on one end and a second directly across from it. Thread a piece of yarn through the two holes and tie the ends together leaving enough extra so the wind sock can be hung. Punch four holes on the other end of the tube. Hang the flames from the four holes punched in the bottom of the tube, leave some length of yarn so the flames can blow around. Use extra construction paper, cut to fit, and wrap the toilet paper tube. Tape the paper on. Decorate the covered tube with markers.
Balloon Trivia - for the older kids: You will need several balloons blown up and a list of trivia questions. Depending on the size of the class the game could be played by teams of individually. The first person up is given a balloon they must keep in the air by blowing on it, no hands. Ask them a trivia question related to todays lesson, such as, "Which book in the Bible does the story of Pentecost appear in?" If they get it correct the next person in line takes over keeping the balloon in the air. If they are wrong another balloon is tossed up and they need to keep both in the air. Ask another question using the same rules. If a balloon hits the ground the child is out. Have many questions on hand. Repeat questions that are answered incorrectly to see if someone else can answer them.

Activity (Series A4 - Lesson 1): Witness Report

Lesson 1: Witnesses for Jesus (Luke 24:36-53)

As part of this lesson the children will complete a "Witness Report:
The children will make a report as though they were with the disciples in Jerusalem. You will need pencils and generic witness form pre-printed so the children can fill in the report. Plain paper will work fine, but parchment looking or parchment patterned paper would be fun. Print the form with the title "Witness Report" at the top and questions such as: Witness Name, Date of Incident, Location of Incident, Time, Describe the Incident that took place, Name others present and their occupations. Have the children imagine as many details as possible, what was the area like, the weather that day, what did Jesus' look like? At the bottom of the form add a date and signature line.

Smaller children can draw pictures instead of writing details. Older children can give a really in-depth account of what they may have seen standing with the disciples the day Jesus revealed himself. Extra fun: Bring in a colored wax candle and improvise a stamp (like the cookie stamps that make pictures on cookies). Teachers can drip hot wax on the bottom of the report and press the stamp. Let it cool, now it looks like an old official document.

Lesson 7: Mary Encounters the Risen Jesus (John 20:11 - 18)

As part of this lesson the children will wrap "His Gift" to us:
For this project each child will need a shoe box (or other small box) with a cover, wrapping paper, tape, markers, extra paper to write on and for the smaller children copies of the picture of Jesus and Mary from Page 29 of Sunday Schoolhouse Resource Book A3 (it may need to be shrunk on the copier). Explain to the children that the greatest gift we have ever received was Jesus raised from the dead - an empty tomb represented by our empty wrapped gift. Use the wrapping paper to wrap the box and the cover separately. The Smaller children can color the picture of Jesus and Mary from page 29 and tape it to the inside cover of the gift box. Older children can write "He is Risen" and copy the prayer from Page 28 on the extra paper and tape it to the inside cover of the box.

The point is to leave the box empty - remind the kids to ask their family if they can guess what the best gift is that is inside the box and have them teach their family what the gift of the empty box reminds us of. Teaching is also an excellent way to learn.

Activity (Series A3 - Lesson 6): Stained Glass Cross

Lesson 6: Pilate has Jesus Crucified (John 19:13 - 30)

As part of this lesson the children will make Stained Glass Crosses:
For this project you will need at least 2 - 8.5x11 pieces of black construction paper per child, clear contact paper, a variety of different colored tissue paper, scissors, a hole punch and yarn. About 2/3 the way up black construction paper begin cutting the paper into the shape of an arch with a pointed top. Then cut out the center of the paper leaving approximately 1/2 inch of the arch (younger children may need their arches pre-cut). With another piece of construction paper cut out a cross that will fit inside of the arch.

Stick the arch on a piece of contact paper and stick the cross inside the arch on the contact paper. Using the tissue paper cut out various geometric shapes from the different colors. Stick them inside the arch/around the cross butting up to one another giving a stained glass look. Cover the "stained glass" with a second piece of contact paper. Trim off the excess. Punch a hole in the top of the arch and add a loop with a piece of yarn for hanging.

For very young children cut out a solid piece of black construction paper in the shape of an arch, cut the cross out of a brown piece of paper and glue various colors of construction paper directly onto the black arch instead of using contact paper. For older children, use thread/yarn to give a lead outline look to their stained glass tissue pieces.

Activity (Series A3 - Lesson 5): Rooster Craft & Detective Game

Lesson 5: Peter Denies Jesus Three Times (Luke 22:47 - 62)

As part of this lesson the younger children can make a rooster craft and the older children can play the detective game:
For the rooster craft each child will need two styrafoam cups, a set of googlie eyes, three feathers, one piece of 5" string, construction paper in orange, yellow and red, and tacky glue. The 5" piece of string will be used to make a loop to hang the rooster for decoration. Cut two rooster legs from the orange construction paper and fold it accordian style. Using the tacky glue, paste the two open ends of the styrofoam cups together making sure to have the two ends of the string tucked in between the cups on the top and the ends of the rooster legs tucked in on the bottom. You should now have the body with the legs hanging out the bottom and the loop on the top. Glue the googlie eyes to the front of the roster (which is the bottom of one of the cups). Cut out a triangle beak and glue it under the eyes. Using the red paper cut out the roosters "comb", the wavy part that sticks up on a rooster head. Fold over a small part of the bottom of the comb in order to glue it to the top of the chickens head so that it can stand up. Glue a feather on each side of the body and one sticking up from the back side of the rooster.

Detective Game: For this game choose a detective who is working for the chief priests in Jerusalem and have that person leave the room. From the group pick another person to be Peter. Everyone, including Peter, chooses an alibi or story explaining why they could not have been with Jesus in the Garden at Gethsemane. Have the detective return to the room and hear everyones alibi. Then everyone tells their alibi a second time, but Peter changes his story slightly. The detective tries to discover which student is Peter by detecting the change in the story. When Peter is discovered by the detective Peter could say, "I am a disciple of Jesus. Jesus please forgive me for denying you."

Activity (Series A3 - Lesson 4): Life Preserver

Lesson 4: "Peter Tries to Walk on Water" (Matthew 14:22-33)

As part of this lesson the children will make a Life Preserver:
You will need a white styrofoam craft wreath, red construction paper (or fabric), tape, markers, tacky glue and rope or thick string. Cut 4 thick strips of red construction paper or fabric of equal widths. Make a stripe on the top, bottom, and both sides of the preserver by wrapping the paper around the wreath and taping it in the back. You will need to use tacky glue if using red fabric. Using the markers the children will write "Jesus" on the strip on the top of the wreath, "is" on the left side, "our" on the right and "Savior" on the bottom strip. Use the rope and tacky glue to decorate the wreath. Rope could outline the inside of the wreath or stripes or outline the outside of the wreath with it.

Alternatives: Each child could make a life preserver or there could be one for the class. If the children are making one wreath each, they could add photos of themselves to the inside of the preserver hanging from some rope. If the class is making one life preserver a class photo could be added to it.

Activity (Series A3 - Lesson 3): Pencil People

Lesson 3: Parable of the Forgiving Father (Luke 15:11 - 32)

As part of this lesson the children will make Pencil People:
For this project each child will need a pencil with an eraser, two wiggly eyes each, craft glue, scissors, fabric remnants, and yarn. Glue the eyes onto the pencil near the eraser end, cut a robe shape out of the fabric and slip them over the pencil below the eyes. Glue the fabric in place and use bits of yarn to act as a belt. Feel free to use other items available for further embellishment; bits of craft foam could make a nose or mouth, etc. Explain that just like the father in the story, when we repent and ask forgiveness for our sins, God our Father erases our sins.

Additional activity to go along with the pencil people:
For younger children, using a pencil make, make a list of sins and add some everyday activities that are not sins. Have the children go through the list erasing only the sins. For older children, have them use their pencil to write a letter to God expressing repentance and asking for forgiveness for something they have done; alternatively, they could write to a person who they need to ask forgiveness from or give forgiveness too. Let them know their letters will not be collected and they can do with them what they choose, i.e. possibly giving them to the person they are writing to.

Activity (Series A3 - Lesson 2): Repentance Experiment

Lesson 2: Jesus Calls Matthew (Matthew 9:9-13)

As part of this lesson the class will do a "repentance experiment":
For the experiment you will need a clear glass full of clear soda pop and raisins. Put a few raisins in the glass of soda pop. Throughout the class time watch the raisins, they will rise to the top of the glass. They may end up sinking and rising again. Explain that our lives of sin and repentance are like the movement of the raisins. When we sin we turn away from God, just like the raisins left to themselves will sink to the bottom of the class. Repentance is when we return to God in faith, like when the raisins return to the top. Some questions to consider:
a) Is it the raisins themselves that have the power to rise, or is something more at work here?
b) Is repentance something that happens just once in our lives, or is it something that needs to happen again and again?

Additional Craft Idea: U-Turn Tire Tracks
For the craft you will need a piece of light colored construction paper for each child, a dark color paint in a tray and a toy car for each child (cars with textured wheels would be the most fun). The level of detail can vary greatly. Older children could list sins or scenarios on the right side of the page and write the prayer from page 8 of the Classroom Resource Book on the left side of the page. Younger children could draw pictures of sinful behavior on the right side of the page and print "God" on the left side.

The children dip the wheels of the car in the paint and drive the car from the left side of the paper "away from God" toward sin, but then turn around and drive back toward God again. The paint will leave "tire tracks" showing how repentance works: as we find ourselves heading toward sin, we turn around and head back to God.

Activity (Series A3 - Lesson 1): Temple Diorama

Sunday Schoolhouse Activity - Unit A3
Lesson 1: Boy Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41 - 52)

As part of this lesson the children will make a Temple Diorama:
For this project each child will need an empty large cereal box, a copy of the drawing of Jesus from the Classroom Resource book (p5), brown construction paper, scissor, markers or crayons, and glue. Cut out a large arched entrance from the front of the box. It should be large enough to allow the picture of Jesus to be added inside the box. Cover the outside of the box with brown construction paper and glue it into place. Color in the picture of Jesus. Cut out the drawing of Jesus leaving about 1 inch under his feet. Fold over the extra paper under Jesus' feet and glue that onto the floor of the box in the archway so that Jesus is standing in the temple. Decorate the temple adding lines for stones on the brown construction paper.

The older children could make a more detailed diorama; for example, cut out a domed window and add an outdoor scene by gluing their drawing to the back of the box. They could draw and add people learning from Jesus in the Temple.

Activity (Series A2 - Lesson 7): Tambourine

Lesson 7: Praise the Lord! (Psalm 150)

As part of this lesson the children will make tambourines:
For this project you will need two heavy paper plates per child, yarn, several hole-punches, scissors, unpopped popcorn or dried beans, markers, decorations such as stickers, sequence, etc. Each child receives two paper plates, depending on age have them write or write for them "Praise the Lord" on the bottom of one of the plates. Then the children can decorate the bottom of both plates with decorations provided. Using the hole-punch take one of the plates and punch holes about every inch around the outsides. Holding the two plates together (bottoms facing out), mark the holes from the first plate onto the second. Punch along the markers on the second plate. Fill one plate with unpopped popcorn or dried beans. Set the second plate on top. Thread the yarn through each of the holes, then tie a knot. Use different color yarn.

Sola Publishing has just released its first Lenten Drama series, entitled: "Will You Betray Me?" The dramas are meant to be featured as part of a mid-week worship series during the Lenten season.

The theme for the series comes from Jesus’ question to Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night he was arrested. In our lives of faith as Jesus’ disciples, it is a question that could be asked of each of us as well. Unlike more simplistic characterizations, these dramas are written in a direct and edgy style, revealing the inner rationalizations and bitterness against Jesus that ultimately led to his death.

Characters include:
1. Simon, the Upstanding Pharisee
2. Rachel, the Concerned Mother
3. Simon, the Innocent Bystander
4. Dinah, the Forgiven Adulteress
5. Judas, the Good Disciple

Scripture texts are assigned for each of the dramas, along with notes for actors. Discussion questions are included with each, to be used as the basis for a sermonic reflection or mini-Bible Study. Activity (Series A2 - Lesson 6): King Xerxes' Scepter

Lesson 6: Esther's Brave Decision (Esther 4:1-17)

As part of this lesson the children will make King Xerxes' Scepter:
For this project you will need a paper towel roll for each child, yellow construction paper, decorations for the scepter (sequins, fake gems, glitter, etc.), glue and a stapler. The paper towel roll will be the base for the scepters. Wrap a large piece of yellow construction paper around the paper towel roll to give a gold look. Glue the paper onto the paper towel roll. Each child should cut a square of yellow construction paper approximately 3.5"x3.5". Attach one corner of the square with glue and/or stapler on the diagonal to the end of the paper towel roll to give the scepter the appearance of having a big diamond on the end. Decorate the roll and "diamond" with jewels. Glue on fake gems, sequins, glitter, etc. Explain to the children that King Xerxes would reach out his scepter to a person in order to give them permission to speak.

Activity (Series A2 - Lesson 5): Lion Head

Lesson 5: Daniel in the Lion's Den (Daniel 6:1 - 28)

As part of this lesson the children will make lion heads:
For this project you will need a paper plate for each child, orange/yellow tissue paper, small pieces of pink tissue paper, six brown or black pipe cleaners per child, masking tape, three buttons per child and markers. The paper plates will be the head of the lion. Glue on the buttons as eyes and a nose. From the bottom of the nose draw two opposing semi-circles to form the jowls. Glue a small piece of pink tissue paper below the nose where the jowls start to make a tongue. Poke the six brown pipe cleaners, three on each side of the lions face, through the plate far enough to tape the ends down on the back of the paper plate. The pipe cleaners may need to be bent somewhat so they do not stick straight out.

Then take the orange/yellow tissue paper and glue small pieces around the face to make the lion's mane. The older children make like to glue their tissue paper as tufts to make a 3D mane (shown left). It may be easier for young children to simply glue tissue pieces down flat. Option: lion head can be made into wall hanging by taping yarn in a loop on the back of the lion head.

Activity (Series A2 - Lesson 4): Mission Field Game

Lesson 4: Isaiah's Vision of God's Throne (Isaiah 6:1 - 13)

As part of this lesson the children will play the Mission Field Game:
For this game you will need a box, a "Ball Bible" for each child, and room to run. The box represents a foreign country that doesn't allow God's Word to be taught to it's people. The "Ball Bible" (or craft foam "Bible") is God's Word. Two children are Enforcers of the country. The rest start on the opposite side of the room from the box and try to bring their Bibles to the foreign country without being tagged by it's Enforcers. If a child is tagged they must go back to the opposite side of the room, then try again.

*Instead of using balls, have a quick craft making small "Bibles" out of craft foam. Simply write "Holy Bible" on the front and/or add a Isaiah's words, "Lord, I will go! Send me."

Activity (Series A2 - Lesson 3): Fiery Wagon Wheel

Sunday Schoolhouse Series Activity - Unit A2
Lesson 3: Elijah is Taken Up into Heaven (2 Kings 2:1-14)

As part of this lesson the children will make a fiery wagon wheel:
For this project each child will need a standard size blue, brown, orange and red piece of construction paper; scissors, glue, and markers. Have a coffee can available in the class room to trace the outer part of the wagon wheel. The blue construction paper will be the background on which the wheel, flames and prayer will be placed. Take the brown construction paper and outline the coffee can to make a circle. Cut out the circle (save the rest of the brown paper), then cut a circle out of the middle of the brown circle you just cut making a ring about 1" thick. This is the outer part of the wagon wheel. With the left over brown paper cut three strips long enough to crisscross the wheel making spokes. Lay the blue construction paper lengthwise and glue the wheel to the right side of the blue paper. Do not glue down the left side of the wheel, this way the flames can be tucked underneath.

Glue the three brown strips of paper crossing in the middle on the wheel making spokes. Using the red and orange construction paper cut out flames in varying lengths. Glue the flames on the left side of the wheel tucking the ends underneath so that it looks like the flames are coming out of the back of the wheel. Write the corresponding lesson prayer listed on the bottom of page 12 on the top left of the blue paper.

For younger children you may want to pre-cut the rings for the wheel and print out copies of the prayer from page 12.

Using Confirmation Tests

The first unit of Sola's Confirmation Series (on the Apostles' Creed) was released this Fall as a "beta" test curriculum. About forty congregations are testing it out this year, responding with feed-back. A second "beta" unit on the Sacraments will be ready for January classes.

I have been distributing by email unit tests and study sheets to those who are trying out the materials. I thought it might be helpful to say a few words about how I use tests as part of the over-all structure of the Confirmation program.

I tend to approach teaching the Creed as three "sub-units" — with a test following each section/article. Since I expect students to do memorization, breaking the series into three units means that there is not too much to memorize at once. For example, I schedule a Fall series on the Creed with 13-14 sessions laid out like this:

Session 3 - Providence
Session 4 - Stewardship
TEST - First Article

Session 5 - Incarnation
Session 6 - Redemption
Session 7 - Resurrection
TEST - Second Article

I often have an "Intro to Confirmation" day at the very beginning (in which I describe the ADTRC prayer and the program requirements), but that may not be necessary in every location. The schedule above allows me to start on Rally Sunday, and go to just before Christmas. The test nights usually also feature a special "fun" activity/treat: ice cream, pizzas, etc.

The "Study Sheet" is something I hand out the week prior to each test. The students are not allowed to use the study sheets for the test. These study sheets can also be used by leaders to check answers -- since I have not prepared a separate "answer key." I usually do a short "family feud"-type review activity the week before the test as well, just prior to handing out the study sheets.

Lesson 2: David Fights Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1 - 49)

For this lesson the children will make a stone craft:
For this project you will need heavy cardstock (8x11 or so) for each child, scissors, five small pebbles for each child, craft glue, a small piece of yarn for each child, and markers. Each child will cut a pouch shape from their cardstock. This will represent David's pouch. Then they will glue the bit of string across the top to look like a tie. The children should glue the five pebbles on the pouch and write "The Battle is the Lord's - 1 Samual 17:47." Small children could use "stones" cut from felt and have the verse printed on paper for them.

Activity (Series A2 - Lesson 1): Wheat & Basket

Lesson 1: Ruth Cares for Naomi (Ruth 1:1-18)

As part of this lesson the children will make wheat and a basket:
For this project you will need yarn, glue, scissors, a piece of brown construction paper for each child and markers. The children will make yarn wheat using several pieces of yarn approximately 5 inches in length. Braid the yarn together leaving the top inch unbraided. Tie a small piece of yarn at the bottom of the braided wheat shaft and at the end of the braid near the top to stop unraveling. Make several pieces of yarn wheat. Cut the constructions paper into a large oval shape and make a slit in the middle lengthwise. This is the basket for the wheat. Under the slit on the basket write, "Lord, help us to be faithful and loyal friends." Then tuck the yarn wheat into the slit. Glue the bottom of the wheat on the back of the basket under the slit and the top of the wheat on the front above the slit. Make crisscross marks on the basket to make it look woven.

For younger children, braid the yarn for them ahead of time or have them cut wheat out of construction paper. They can cut several slits on the top inch of the shaft for the wheat top look.

Sola Christmas Program

Sola’s new Sunday School Christmas Program is patterned after the style of a traditional children’s Christmas pageant, centering on the biblical narratives of Jesus’ birth as found in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. The program allows for children to lead in music and scripture readings, but also features participation by the gathered congregation and adult leaders. The program is intentionally simple and “generic” — allowing for modifications and additions according to local custom, but focusing on the primary function of telling the story of Scripture.

The program in this booklet was created to accompany Year A (blue) materials in Sola Publishing’s Sunday Schoolhouse series, but it may be used as a stand-alone resource for use with children in any congregation. The Year A program is based around five main Scripture lessons, with a familiar Christmas song associated with each lesson. The program is printed as a 8.5 x 5.5" booklet.

Activity (Series A1 - Lesson 7): Horn & Walls

Lesson 7: Joshua and the Walls of Jericho (Joshua 6:1 - 21)

As part of this lesson children will make horns and knock down the walls of Jericho:
For this project you will need an empty paper-towel roll for each child, along with things to decorate the horn (markers, glue, scissors, stickers, streamers). Also needed are building blocks such as cardboard/foam bricks, wooden toy blocks, or blocks from a popular building game.

Each child should decorate their paper-towel roll horn, and together use the blocks to build a large tower. When everyone is ready, act out the Bible Story by having the children march around the structure seven times. Then together, have them blow the horns and knock the tower down. Younger children will like simply knocking things over. Older children might actually play the a brick-stacking game and remove blocks from the tower until it crumbles. If an adult or older child plays a horned instrument, it may be fun to have them play a song for everyone and see how closely the other children can replicate the song with their horns.

Speaking of "the lost has been found" -- it reminds me of the parable: “What woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:8-10)

Activity (Series A1-Lesson 6): The Ten Commandments

Lesson 6: Commandments and the Golden Calf (Exodus 32:1 - 24)

As part of this lesson, have the children make the Ten Commandments:
For this project you will need one large piece of tag board (12x18 or so) or heavy construction paper per student, one paper bag per student, glue, and markers or the Ten Commandments printed out for each child. Have the children cut two tablet shapes out of the paper bags - you may need to trace them for the younger children. Crumple the tablets encouraging the children to smash them really well to make them look old and weathered. Smooth the tablets and glue them onto the tag board (make sure they put the blank side up). Glue on the printed commandments five on each tablet or write the commandments on the tablets with markers.

It may be useful to list the commandments in a language more easily understood for the younger children. The following come from Sola's "Luther's Small Catechism: Children's Version". 1. I am the Lord your God, do not trust in any other Gods. 2. Do not use God's name in any worthless way. 3. Take a day off each week, and set it aside for God. 4. Pay attention to your dad and mom. 5. Do not kill. 6. Be loyal to the person you are married to. 7. Do not steal. 8. Do not lie about other people. 9. Do not wish to have someone else's house. 10. Do not wish to have what belongs to someone else.

Options: The younger children could draw pictures for some of the commandments, such as a picture of their mom or dad to represent honoring their mother and father. The older children could use Roman numerals for the numbering. Also, the class could make one very large set of commandments to hang in the classroom.

Activity (Series A1 - Lesson 5): Parting of the Red Sea

Lesson 5: The Parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:1 - 31)

As part of this lesson the children will make Moses parting the Red Sea:
For this lesson each child will need a large piece of brown construction paper, glue, blue tissue paper, 1 pipe cleaner, sea life stickers, markers, scissors, yarn and a copy of the prayer listed in the Classroom Resource Book Year A-Unit 1 for this lesson (page 20).

The children will hold the large piece of brown construction paper horizantally and fold it into thirds. Tear the blue tissue paper and glue it in bunches over the two outside thirds of the paper representing the parting waters of the Red Sea. Glue a copy of the prayer listed in the Resource Book to the middle third at the bottom of the paper. Using markers the children can draw a picture of Moses in the middle of the paper above the prayer. The pipe cleaner will be glued onto the paper as if Moses were holding it as his staff. The yarn can be cut in small pieces and glued onto Moses face as his beard. Add sea life stickers for further decoration. [Option: Give the children scrap fabric so they can make a robe for Moses.]

Activity (Series A1 - Lesson 4): Postive/Negative Art

Lesson 4: Joseph and the Dreams in Prison (Genesis 40:1 - 23)

As part of this lesson the children will make positive/negative art:
For this project you will need two different colors of construction paper for each student, scissors, glue and a printed paraphrased version of Jeremiah 29:11-12 printed for each student. The paraphrase could be written, "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, for your welfare and a future of hope. I will hear you when you pray to me." This verse from the prophet also summarizes the experience of Joseph in this week's lesson. Joseph faced many positive and negative events in his life, but God had a plan for him all along. His future was hopeful even when Joseph could not see it and God answered his prayers.

Each child will choose two pieces of construction paper of two different colors. One piece will be the background. With the other piece the children should fold the paper in half and cut a free hand design out of the folded edge. They will now have positive and negative paper of their design. For both the "positive" design and the "negative" cut out left-over the children will cut the design down the middle. Glue the left half of the cut out "positive" design to the left side of the background construction paper. Glue the right half of the left-over "negative" design to the right side of the background construction paper (as shown to the right). The younger children can glue the verse on the paper; while the older children could write the verse themselves weaving it in and around their design.

Activity (Series A1-Lesson 3): "Who are You?" Mask

Lesson 3: Jacob Tricks His Father Isaac (Genesis 27:1-45)

As part of this lesson, have the children make a mask to hide their identity:
For this project you will need heavy construction paper of varied colors, paint sticks/large tongue depressors, masking tape, scissors, markers, glue and anything on hand the kids could use to add 3D decorations to their masks; such as foam stickers, fabric, yarn, etc. Each child should choose a piece of colored construction paper and cut it in any shape large enough to cover their faces, oval, triangle - let the children use their imagination. Hold the paper in front of the each child's face to locate the approximate area the eye holes should be cut out of the mask. Younger children may need help cutting the eye holes. Let the children use various items to decorate their masks. Yarn could make hair or eyebrows, fabric could cover the whole face - the possibilities are endless. Tape a paint stick/large tongue depressor to the back side of the construction paper mask with several inches of the stick sticking out from the bottom of the mask so the children can hold it in front of their faces.

Craft tip:
It is often helpful to make an example of the day's given craft before class. This will familiarize the teacher with the process and give the children a visual example of what they are trying to make.

Lesson 2: "The Tower of Babel" (Genesis 11:1-9)

As part of this lesson, have the children make a Graham Cracker Tower:
For this project the class will need frosting, graham crackers, pretzel sticks, plastic knives for spreading the frosting and paper plates. Break the children into teams of two. One team member keeps possession of the graham crackers and pretzel sticks; the other member keeps the frosting, knife and plate. Each child must think of a new name for the items they have in their possession and keep that name a secret from their partner. For example, the frosting may be renamed "cheetah". In order for their teammate to use the frosting it needs to be requested by its new name, cheetah. The children must ask one another, not grab or pantomime, for the items needed to complete the task of building a graham cracker tower. It just may be impossible because the children will not know the names of the materials they need to use...it will all sound like babel.

Here is a "beginning of the year" tip:
Begin the morning with sharing highs and lows. The children are given the opportunity to share a high point and low point from their week/weekend.

Lesson 1: "Adam and Eve's Temptation" (Genesis 3:1-21)

As part of this lesson, have the children make an Apple Mosaic:
Draw, print-out and cut the shape of an apple out of card stock, roughly 7 inches in diameter. Provide each child markers, construction paper, scissors, glue, a small copy of the prayer listed in the classroom resource book, along with red, green, and yellow tissue paper squares. Have the children trace the apple template on their piece of construction paper and cut it out. Then, glue various pieces of tissue paper squares over the entire apple. Finally, glue the small copy of the day's prayer in the center of the apple. [Alternatives: Pre-cut the apples for the younger children. Let older children write the prayers in the center of the apple and bunch up the tissue paper before gluing them making the mosaic 3D; or, decorate both sides and add a string to the top so it can be hung.]

Here's a "beginning of the year" tip:
Start your morning with circle greetings; for example, the ball toss greeting. Everyone stands in a circle, one person gently tosses a ball to someone and says, "Good morning ________ " (naming that person). That person returns the greeting and tosses to someone who has not yet been tossed the ball. This will help the children learn one another's names and is a nice way to start the class.

Report from the L-CORE/NALC Gathering

My apologies for the delay in responding to the many emails that were sent to me in the last week expressing interest in Sola’s new Sunday Schoolhouse and Confirmation series. I just returned from the Lutheran CORE theological conference and convocation in Columbus, OH. I will follow-up with all messages as soon as I can.

I want to express thanks to all those who introduced themselves to me at the Lutheran CORE gathering, and for the great reception Sola Publishing received from attendees. It is an honor to serve as the primary publishing resource provider to Lutheran Core and the larger confessional movement, including folks in: WordAlone, LCMC, and now, NALC. It is great to be a part of this exciting new adventure in faith.

At Sola, we have been working at an incredible pace to provide the basic education materials needed by congregations for the coming year. Sola Confirmation Series

The first installment in the Sola Confirmation Series is a ten session series on the Apostles' Creed. The initial draft has been completed, and is undergoing preparations for release in the beginning of September.

The materials are being designed with the needs of small congregations in mind. The "workbook style" approach provides a four pages for each session, including: an opening worship dialog, ice-breaker activity, Scripture readings, catechism practice, object lessons, small group Bible study, memory symbols, and student prayers. The series could be easily led by a pastor or lay leader with little advance preparation, or it could serve as a in-class handout or homework sheet for an established program. The curriculum is also well-suited to home-school or independent study.

The series is being made available beginning this Fall, not for sale, but as a curriculum in development. We already have about three dozen congregations that will be trying out the curriculum as a "beta test" version this year. Comments and feedback will be posted on this blogsite.

New “Sunday Schoolhouse” Series

With all the changes taking place in the larger church, people have been looking for options in education materials. Since Sola Publishing exists to serve the specific needs of LCMC, WordAlone, Lutheran CORE, and NALC – I’ve been asked to put a priority on producing a basic Sunday School series for churches to begin using this Fall.

What I’ve come up with is something a little different from other things available on the market. Sola’s new Sunday Schoolhouse series is a flexible curriculum focusing on the priority of God’s Word. I am taking an “old school” approach with emphasis less on “activities” and more on teaching Bible stories. Multiple presentations of the story are built in to each lesson, including: story, rhyme, and drama.

Since more elaborate programs are available through other publishers, I’ve designed this series with the particular needs of small churches, mission congregations, and house churches in mind. The “all-in-one” reproducible style allows for children of varying ages and grade levels to meet together in a flexible manner, suitable to local needs.

The series as a whole will be based on a three-year cycle, with a full Bible overview each year. Years A-B-C will each have four units of seven sessions each (two OT and two NT). Beginning this Fall, our first Classroom Resource Book will be available for Year A - Unit 1 (best provided as one book per teacher/class), with other books for 2010-2011 coming in the months ahead. There will also be a Leader’s Manual ready this Fall, describing the whole series cycle and providing information for superintendents, teachers, and helpers.

Welcome to the new blogsite for information and feedback on Sola Publishing educational materials. This site, called "Sola Publishing - Table Talks" will share information on current educational materials available through Sola, as well as new materials in development. Come back again; much more will be coming soon — including a new Bible Story-based Sunday School Curriculum series, as well as the first in installment in Sola's new Confirmation Series (on the Apostles' Creed), both coming this Fall.
